Long Trip to Cancun

Travelling long distances can actually be kind of fun; lots of us think a lot on how boring and tiresome can a transatlantic flight could be before even have taken it. Actually, many people don’t even bother to plan such a trip, they rather choose some domestic or a relatively short flight for their vacations. But believe me, it only can be boring if You want it to be like that.

I just came to Cancun for a few weeks ;) from Europe, my trip started at Hungary, I live in the capital city of Budapest, and because there is no direct flight to Mexico (yet) I have to choose from other european cities for stopover, so, I had the opportunity to travel through Zurich with Swiss Airlines, this was a short flight, about 1 hour and 45 minutes, very comfortable with great service by the flight attendants, lunch was decent, fresh and clean, but what I liked the most was dessert, they gave us Movenpick ice cream, it was delicious!

Once we arrived, I didn´t have to worry about my luggage, I just made sure it was there, ready for the next plane, because I booked my luggage to be sent straight to Cancun, so after cheking that out with the right person, I went to get some info of the city and how to get there. I had plenty of time, as my next flight was for the next day, at midday. The weather was perfect for a walk to Zurich’s downtown streets; just 20 minutes by tram, and there I was, surrounded by lots of brand boutiques, small streets just for pedestrians, lots of locals and other tourists walking back and forth; actually, the streets looked busy for a 6 pm weekday and almost all stores and restaurants were opened, so I made some shopping and had dinner too.

Back at the airport, I found out where to spend the night; since I know I can’t sleep on airplanes, the best thing to do is to get some proper rest, so I headed to the info boot and asked for the Dayrooms, fortunatelly, they had available single rooms, so I reserved 1. It had a comfortable single bed, air conditioned, cable tv and a sink, also a big window facing an area of the airport, which is on current construction; so since the view wasn’t the most pleasant I just closed the curtain, and made myself comfortable watching Yes Man with Jim Carrey... Next morning the alarm rang at 7:30 as I asked the reception lady to do so, but I was already awake and returning from the shower. So before 9 am I was already heading to the gate to catch the railway that took me to the other side of the airport which looked brand new. Made some shopping and had breakfast while waiting for the next boarding at 11:45 am.

Once on the plane heading for America, I just had to think that in a few hours I would be in Cancun enjoying the beach. So I made myself comfortable, relaxed with some movies, plus, the service and the meals were good and also had a delicious dessert. The plane made a stop at Varadero, Cuba, but it was a quickie, some passengers got off and others on, and then departed to Cancun, - just 1 hour left and I’ll be there! - I said to myself.

Underwater Museum in Cancun

Cancun seems to be in constant development in 2010.
This year has brought many many new things that definitely help us take the final
decision that it is a must-do activity to return to this popular Caribbean destination.

The beach recovery has left Cancun beaches with spectacular, long sandy beaches! Perfect place to take a breath, and sit down - playing with the new brightly white sand in our hands,to wonder the amazing turquoise Ocean view, and don't think of any common stressful thought, just simply sit and enjoy the sound of waves passing by.

Ok, but after you have recharged your energies, you feel like you need something
really special! Here we are! An Underwater museum with underwater sculptures!
Another new and unique monument in Cancun! Actually, the largest underwater museum in our World! A magical area between Cancun and the island in front of Cancun, called Isla Mujeres (half an hour on ferry to cross) will be the home place of this museum, within the Marine Natural Park.

You have to submerge to the depth of 3 to 6 meters in the Caribbean Sea to see the pieces exposed, approximately 400 sculptures!!! The artist is a recognized British sculptor, Jason de Caires Taylor. The theme of the sculptures will vary; there will be local Mayan theme pieces, and other moments of our everyday life. One sculpture that is called the “Dream Catcher” cannot wait YOUR message! Yes, yes, YOUR message! Since you can put in a bottle your message and leave it there attached to this sculpture! The first message belongs to Lic. Roberto Diaz Abraham, the President of the Underwater Museum, tells: “May our hearts, never become as hard as our heads”.

Beside to be a new attraction at this well-known tourist destination, another very important point of the underwater museum is that it is a real Green, eco-project with the aim to create more coral reefs and conserve the existing ones. The coral reefs help the ecosystem to restore the bigger and bigger damages of the global warming that is why it has such a big importance.

By now, the next step is to sink about 250 sculptures by April 2010. All of us cannot wait to hear more news about this unique Underwater museum!

What to do when it is cold in Cancun?

Winter is the perfect season when it comes on being outdoors when you are in Cancun, and if you are vacationing you will probably find it a little bit amusing, especially when walking on the streets, you may find that most of the locals are all covered up, wearing a sweater, a leather jacket or other really warm clothing, while you are on shorts, a thin shirt and sandals, looking so fresh with a cold beer in your hand and your D&G sunglasses. But don’t worry, locals won’t be staring at you like thinking, what is this person doing dressed like that in an 18°C weather??? Isn’t He / She freezing??? All the opposite, they will see you with a smile in their faces and you may laugh too, but when if not now? , that local citizens can be wearing their winter garments that have being locked in their closets for so long!
So for winter time, here are some recommendations what to do:

1. Archeological sites are perfect places to start with! Finally, you can walk around relaxed, without sweating, and you might have all the energy to see more than at summertime, when after an hour walking you felt like you wanted to jump into the inviting crystal water of the nearby cenote, the nearest pool or simply refresh in the Caribbean Sea, but immediately!
• Chichen Itza,
• Tulum
• Coba
• Uxmal.

2. Explore Cancun by foot (Downtown and Hotel Zone)
• Downtown: Getting there is very easy and fast, once you get off the bus, you can go walking a few minutes just to get to Mercado 28 or Market 28, a very popular handcrafts shopping spot for tourists and locals. Parque de las palapas is on the way to the market, try a churros, an esquite (corn with cream, lime juice and chilli) or a marquesita (like waffle).
• Hotel Zone: in the hotel zone of Cancun, you can find a 25 km long walking road with a beautiful palm tree line. All the spots worth to visit are on this way: Shopping centers, party zone, restaurants etc…

3. Play golf on any of the wonderful evergreen golf courses! Enjoy the view, the perfect weather and this traditional high class sport!
